About
Have you been looking at the name “Chimp” and tried to work out what it meant? Did you rack that brain of yours looking for an answer to a question that made no sense?
Seriously, why would a website named “Chimp” have so many references to photography on it.
Well, it wouldn’t be a website without an About page or an FAQ so consider this a declaration of both!
- About Chimp
- What does “Chimp” mean?
- Who are we?
- What do we write about? What do our sections mean?!
- Can I get my parking validated?
- Questions, comments, complaints…
Chimp is a website & magazine based on photography, videography, and any & all aspects relating to each of those fields. This includes the art of each, education, reviews & previews of equipment, software, travel journals, and anything else that you can think of where a camera might be needed.
The project originally started in late 2006 as a digital magazine for the DSLR Users forum that hit three issues before an increased workload on the magazine’s editor forced him to give it up.
But now it’s back in a website with plans to go back to making the digital magazine in late 2009/early 2010.
Everyone chimps, it’s just that most of us don’t actually know it when we’re doing it.
Chimping is a photographic term that is specific to the field of digital photography. You could not chimp on a manual film-based camera unless you had a digital back plugged into it because chimping is this:
Everytime you take a picture and look at the LCD to check your image, you are chimping.

Ever looked at your photo right after taking it? That's called "Chimping".
The term comes from what people do when they first see the image on the back of the camera, which is by pointing at it and going “Ooo! Ooo!” like a monkey or a chimp.
Hence the term Chimp.
“We” – the collective term – are a bunch of photographers who can also write. We write about what we love: the field of optics & technology, and while we’re all technologists in a sense, we’re also photographers which means we’re all aware of the art & history that comes with the technology we use. Which means we can review gear AND educate you.
And if that doesn’t help you, we’re also professionals who have worked in fashion photography, art, education, and technology. So there.
What do we write about? What do our sections mean?!
You’ve probably noticed quite the selection of sections on the menu bar just under the big writing that says “CHIMP”. That’s our logo, by the way. You’ve probably worked that part out.
But not all our sections make the most sense because we only have so much space to write down the category name, so in case you’re confused about it all, here’s what they mean:
- Accessories: Flash heads, tripods, ball-heads, lighting gear, backpacks, torches – no reasonable accessory refused!
- Cameras: Point & shoot, DSLR, medium-format, large-format. Hell, we’ll even review film cameras too!
- Computers: Laptops, desktops, palmtops, and peripherals like tablets, mice, scanners, and printers.
- Education: Tips, guides, and tutorials to help you be a better photo- and videographer.
- Features: Special stories made for our magazine and for our website. Interviews, too.
- Lenses: Lenses for cameras. Any sort of lens. Homemade included.
- Magazine: The place where we store our digital viewable editions of Chimp (the magazine).
- Software: Adobe Photoshop, plugins, and other forms of post-processing software.
- Travel: Stories written by people who have traveled somewhere with their camera.
Can I get my parking validated?
Yes, but not here.
This is a photography website, not a parking lot.
If you’ve arrived here by accident and you’re convinced you’ve parked your car in a Westfield somewhere, you may want to retrace your footsteps and hope that one of them leads you to the place where your vehicle is.
Next time, try taking a picture of where you parked it. We can help you with the whole “picture taking” part.
Who can I direct any questions, comments, or complaints I may have?
If you have anything to say to us – anything at all – please make sure to hit us up at our Contact page where a friendly form will be sure to collect your details, message, and email us so we can eventually attend to it.
